Nenagh Town Council

Nenagh Town Council Leisure Center

Location:

Nenagh Leisure Centre is located on the Dublin road in Nenagh approx 1km from the center of Nenagh Town, Co. Tipperary

Facility Function:

The Leisure centre consists of a 25m main pool, a junior pool and a mixed use gym.

Annual Energy Consumption:

The Site uses three different energy sources.

Electricity: 336 Mwh per annum at a cost of approx €65,000

Fuel Oil: 927Mwh per annum at a cost of approx €45,000

LPG: 360 Mwh per annum at a cost of approx €28,000

Main Energy Consuming Equipment

The Pool itself has a large heat load, due to evaporation losses, heating fresh water and heat loss. The Air handling unit consumes all the LPG and a significant % of the electricity (~25%).

The main consumers of electricity are:

1. AHU approx 40%

2. Filter Pumps: 25%

3. Sauna and Steam room: 18%

4. Lighting: 12%

Cost and Energy Savng Actions

1. On monitoring of the Pool energy usage, it was discovered that the turndown at night was not always to the same point. by examining the trace on the electricity usage, the Air handling unit was thought to be the item not being switched off reliably. Reducing this will save approx €3,700 per annum on electricity and €5,200 on LPG usage at night.

2. There were further housekeeping items identified on the trace, where it could be seen that the sauna and steam room (22KW load between them) were turned on at differing times depending on the day. A weekly programmable controller will be installed to ensure that the sauna and steamroom will be turned off when not scheduled to be used (durring children's swimming classes etc).

3. The hot water circulation system runs on a 5kw pump with no turn down for periods of idle use. The pump is designed to deliver water to 10 showers simultaneously, however it will not be required to do that all the time. Investigation into installing a control system that would slow down the pump when no or low demand for water is present.

4. A Lighting audit will be completed, however it is unlikely that there will be much savings here, as the building is not obviously over lit, and it is in use for a large portion of the day.

5. A Renewable Heating Feasibility study will be completed to ascertain whether solar and/ or Biomass heating could be used to reduce the heating bills and CO2 emmissions from the pool.
